Frank Lloyd Wright - Still Influential Today
Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator who is widely regarded as one of the greatest architects of the 20th century. He was born on June 8, 1867, in Richland Center, Wisconsin, and he passed away on April 9, 1959.
Wright pioneered the Prairie School movement of architecture, which emphasized horizontal lines and open interior spaces, integrating the structure with its natural surroundings. His designs often featured geometric shapes and organic motifs inspired by nature. Some of his most famous works include Fallingwater, a house built over a waterfall in Pennsylvania; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, known for its distinctive spiral form; and the Robie House in Chicago.
Throughout his career, Wright designed over 1,000 structures, including houses, offices, churches, schools, and museums. He also developed the concept of "organic architecture," which sought to harmonize buildings with their environment and reflect the needs and lifestyles of their inhabitants.
Wright's work has had a profound influence on modern architecture, and he remains a highly celebrated figure in the field. Here at Springhouse, for Architectural Director Todd Yoby, Todd’s favorite Wright design is Fallingwater. This home still stands as an unparalleled example of organic architecture. After its completion, Time called Fallingwater Wright's "most beautiful job" and it is listed among Smithsonian’s "Life List of 28 Places to See Before You Die.”
When we asked Todd what makes Fallingwater so important, he quoted Pulitzer Prize-winning architectural critic, Paul Goldberger, "Great architecture, like any great art, ultimately takes you somewhere that words cannot take you at all. Fallingwater does that the way Chartres Cathedral does that. There’s some experience that gets you in your gut and you just feel it, and you can’t quite even say it. My whole life is dealing with architecture and words, and at the end of the day, there is something that I can’t entirely say when it comes to what Fallingwater feels like.”
