Prep Kitchen and Working Pantry

Springhouse Architects - Luxury Custom Home Design | Dayton, Cincinnati & Columbus Ohio

A prep kitchen and a working pantry are two types of auxiliary kitchen spaces often found in larger homes or luxury kitchens, designed to support the main kitchen by adding functionality and storage.

Prep Kitchen (or Back Kitchen)

A prep kitchen is a secondary kitchen space typically located adjacent to or behind the main kitchen. It is used primarily for:

  • Food preparation (chopping, mixing, cooking)

  • Messy tasks (e.g., deep frying, baking, washing dishes)

  • Keeping the main kitchen clean and presentable for entertaining

  • Storage for extra appliances, cookware, or food

Common features include:

  • Counter space

  • Sink(s)

  • Oven, microwave, or cooktop

  • Dishwasher

  • Cabinets or open shelves

  • Sometimes a second refrigerator or freezer

It’s especially useful when entertaining or hosting events, allowing caterers or helpers to work out of sight.

Working Pantry

A working pantry goes beyond a traditional food storage area. It’s a functional, walk-in space that blends storage with utility, and is often used for:

  • Storing dry goods, canned items, and baking supplies

  • Small appliance use (e.g., coffee maker, mixer, toaster)

  • Extra counter space for staging or food prep

  • Hidden clutter – keeping the main kitchen tidy

Common features include:

  • Shelving (for food and equipment)

  • Countertops

  • Electrical outlets for appliances

  • Sometimes a small sink or even refrigeration

Prep Kitchen vs. Working Pantry

Feature Prep Kitchen Working Pantry
Primary Function Cooking and prep tasks Storage and light food prep
Common Appliances Stove, oven, sink, dishwasher Mixer, toaster, coffee machine
Visibility Hidden from main entertaining area Usually tucked away, out of sight
Food Storage Some, but secondary Primary dry goods storage

In modern home design, both spaces are often used to enhance efficiency and aesthetics in open-concept kitchens, especially for people who cook often or entertain regularly.
