Why Do We Call Ourselves “Springhouse Architects?” Where We Started & Where We Are Today

Before it grew into a team of seven, Springhouse Architects began exactly as it was named—in an old stone springhouse located on my rural Clear Creek Township property I purchased years ago. Although hidden by overgrown brush and occupied by wild critters, I envisioned an inspiring space to serve as my growing architectural design firm.

It was a two-story building—the lower level is where the spring ran through. We removed the upper floor, covered the lower level with a slab and replaced the front stone wall with glass. It was the perfect place for our first office! At the time, I was the only employee, and I was as excited about breathing life into the springhouse as I was about renovating the farmhouse where I would reside. In fact, I was so inspired by the potential of the space, I changed the name of my business from Scott Architecture to what’s now known as Springhouse Architects.

Springhouse has since evolved from one person in a refurbished home-based office to a seven-person team of project managers, interior designers and support staff located in a new warehouse space in Springboro, Ohio. On average, we manage 12 to 15 residential projects in various stages across Dayton and southwest Ohio and have since expanded into commercial work, as well.

Before Springhouse Architects—and even before Scott Architecture—I earned my degree in architecture from the University of Cincinnati, then worked part time with Atelier Design in Centerville while raising my family.

Growing up, both of my parents operated a manufacturing company, which inspired me on my entrepreneurial journey—but it was the downturn in business for residential builders and architectural companies during the 2008 recession when I officially decided to launch my own business. Not to mention, my passion for creating a home you’ll love.

With over 25 years experience in residential architecture and licensed by AIA & NCARB, I’ve guided hundreds of clients through the complex project of custom home building that led them to a family home where they can settle in at night in a place of comfort. I’ve since been appointed by the city as the Chair of  the Springboro Historic Downtown Architectural Review Board and serve as the architect on several Home Owners Association boards.

Listening to clients’ ideas about what defines their ideal house is inspiring, and watching their reaction when they see those ideas brought to life is fulfilling. Architectural design is like an artist with a blank canvas, only you listen to what clients want and then transform it into a destination where they will live their dreams.
