Updates to Our Online Course + Moving to Our New Office

This past year has been quite a busy one for Springhouse—we’ve met a lot of new people, worked on some incredible projects, won a national design award for one of our custom homes, launched Springhouse Collaborative and created an online course, to boot.

As you can see, a lot has been happening here at Springhouse, so we thought we’d give you an update!

Create a Home You Love Online Course

One of the main projects we’ve been working on is creating a weekend-long online course designed to help you start the custom home-building process with confidence. We just wrapped up our first beta-test group, which went well. We hope their comments and feedback from the survey will make it that much more robust!

To give you an insider’s perspective, we began the class with introductions, as well as an outline of what to expect. Then, we jumped into the lessons—there are five total, but we only went through two of them. The first lesson had to do with their ‘why.’ Why are you doing this project? Why now? Why does this make sense? Why are you passionate about it? Why custom? From there, we developed worksheets to lead them through these prompts. The idea was to get to the lower part of the iceberg—the tip is what you see, but there’s so much underneath that. Even better, if the students were married or had a partner, the worksheets helped ensure they were both on the same page.

To piggyback on the first lesson, the second lesson had to do with their priorities—aka, the most important thing to work through before talking to any architect or builder. On a piece of paper, we had them list their top three priorities, as well as why those were their priorities. So you can see how all of this is kind of building on each other.

By the end of the night, their job was to continue working on these worksheets and asking questions. Maybe they needed to further define a priority or get to the bottom of their ‘why.’ Maybe their partner's top three priorities didn’t line up with theirs. These first few hours put them in a really great place to make hard decisions before moving forward—if you take this course, it's going to be well worth your time.

Our New Office

Springhouse has officially moved to a new office! Over the past couple of months, we’ve been busy making selections, details and decisions and about what it’ll look like and how it will be structured.

Our new warehouse is an abandoned car mechanic shop. We're saving a portion of it for storage—this way, when we’re building a home for someone, we can order and hold items like appliances or exterior materials until they’re ready to be installed. The rest of it will be our office, which will be an open, industrial space.

So far, we’ve painted the ceiling, installed the electric and ground the concrete floors. We also had some very special end walls put in. In a nutshell, there’s a separation from the front lounge space, which makes it feel like a coworking space, and the rear where we all work. We put a herringbone wood pattern from reclaimed wood on this wall and it's amazing! We also gave the office some fun finishes. For example, we’re working with these incredible tamarisk woodworking guys to create a beautiful wood table. It’s a lot of fun, but a lot of work! We can’t wait for you to see it.

That’s all for now! For more real-time updates, subscribe to our monthly newsletter—or check out Springhouse Collaborative!
