Architect's Journal: Inspiration for the Barn House
In our office we have three projects that used barn imagery as a basis of design.
- One single family home where the inspiration was an old bank barn turned modern home.
- One actual old bank barn being renovated into an event center.
- One cabin that feels like a little side barn with perfect proportions.
It is fascinating to me when totally separate clients and projects end up with the same inspiration photos. Here are a few that I've seen multiple times and I'm in love with each of them for different reasons. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
This one has perfect proportions and beautiful colors.

This family home is obviously barn like due to the barn red color, but I also love the extended roof line being held up with minimal wood brackets. The vertical board & batten siding is lovely as well.

That gable end that is totally open as a glass wall. Wow. Doesn't get much better than that. Except for the modern fireplace that feeds straight up through the center.

This beauty is just a perfect study of proportion and balance, color and light, setting and site.

I hope you have enjoyed these inspiration photos. Studying beautiful architecture is a favorite part of my job.
